What does a good Independent House Design really feel like?
Often, homeowners come to architects seeking a spacious home with many rooms, sometimes thinking that it is the best for them. However, an independent house design is not about its size, but rather about how we feel while living inside.
Let us explore how a well-designed independent house is created step-by-step through one of our projects.

A sense of calm
The clients, originally from Tamil Nadu, went to the US and now like to settle in Bangalore after their retirement. The clients are also parents to two daughters who will also be using this home when they come back. They wanted a spacious four-bedroom duplex with skylight and courtyards that define modern living with a traditional feel.
As we enter the home, a lush landscape with a fish pond in the north-east quadrant, which is an auspicious direction for placing a water element as per Vastu. Adjacent to it, we located the parking while keeping the main entry for the independent house design in the centre. This central entrance gives way to a sense of calm along the water body
Central entrance to the home
As we move ahead, we have created a small informal space instead of a foyer to include seating as soon as people enter the home. From here, guests can be attended to without entering the family spaces.
Adjacent to this, the family living area in a double-height space is designed that visually connect the two floors in the G+1 independent house design. Other spaces on the ground floor are the dining and kitchen set alongside this living room in an open layout. The ground floor also includes a guest bedroom and a master bedroom with deck extensions for an indoor-outdoor connection.

A courtyard experience that matches their lifestyle
In the ground floor of the independent house design, we included a Puja area with a skylight, as the clients were specific about bringing in a traditional touch in the modern home. This also becomes the highlight of the home as it falls in the central part of the home, or otherwise called the Brahmastan as per Vastu, which is also the most suitable place for the placement of a Puja.

The advantage of having a Puja area with a skylight allows us to explore landscaping within the home, and even a step-down Puja unit with a water element in the interiors. Such a setup brings in a feel of a courtyard within the home, while we also arrange a spacious Puja unit
Bedrooms that are private and well-lit
Generally, in any independent home design, the common spaces are well-lit as they usually follow an open-planning layout. Sometimes, a compromise in both privacy and light in bedrooms is inevitable. However, as architects, we nullify these concerns and focus on design that lets in ample light, ventilation, and privacy wherever needed.
Dining area in an open plan layout
In bedrooms, too, we brought in a layout that makes it feel spacious and well-lit. The clients were specific about having walk-in wardrobes for all four bedrooms to segregate the storage and the bedspace for the user. Each bedroom also has a deck extension on the ground floor and a balcony on the first floor.
Also, this independent house design is set on a corner plot, and adding these decks and balconies gives a good opportunity for the elevation. Moreover, there is a park right opposite the plot, giving good views from the balconies and decks.

On the first floor, the clients liked to design a room for their daughters and themselves, which follows the same layout as the bedrooms on the ground floor. In the master bedroom on the first floor, the clients liked to include a dedicated study area, which we pushed behind the TV unit that demarcates each space according to the respective activity.

Each bedroom has a TV unit along with a spacious area to accommodate king-sized beds with side tables and a back panel.

An elevation design that stands out
As homeowners, you can choose any style of elevations for your home, to make it stand out from others is what makes it a commendable independent house design. For this home, the clients liked a modern style, and this is a corner plot for which a minimal contemporary design looks the best.

The elevation uses a minimum colour palette that keeps the design from standing out in the community. The wooden ceiling details add a pop of colour, which becomes an essential part of the modern design. The marble-clad details also complement the overall colours and add a luxurious look to the independent house design.
Balconies and decks here are becoming integral parts of the modern elevation design.
On this side of the elevation, the staircase wall becomes a highlighting feature while the rest of the elevation is complete within the threshold with the balcony extensions and no additional projections are needed here.

Frequently Asked Questions:
A well-designed independent house responds to lifestyle, climate, and site conditions. It feels comfortable, easy to live in, and personal, rather than just visually impressive.
No. While aesthetics matter, good design is primarily about how spaces function, feel, and perform over time. Light, ventilation, circulation, privacy, and material choices play a bigger role than surface appearance.
Not at all. Thoughtful planning can make even compact homes feel spacious, open, and comfortable. Good design improves the quality of space, not just the quantity.
Climate influences orientation, window placement, shading, ventilation, and material selection. Homes designed with climate in mind feel naturally cooler, brighter, and more comfortable throughout the year.
Very important. Natural light improves comfort, mood, and energy efficiency. Well-designed homes allow daylight in while avoiding glare and heat.
